Behind the scores - James Suckling tasted 5 Gilvesy wines

This entry level wine really shows the progress that Hungary’s leading winemakers have made in recent years! Brimming with sliced-pear character with a touch of honeysuckle, this is a juicy and elegant dry riesling with stacks of immediate appeal, but also spot-on balance at the long, silky finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink now. Screw cap.

The interplay of orange-marmalade character and beautifully crafted, fine tannins on the medium to full body, then the long, silky finish make this a standout orange wine. Technically impeccable and really delicious! Very low sulfite addition. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

Finely nuanced and youthful nose of quince and candied citrus, plus a slew of herbal notes. Really concentrated with great textural complexity, but still only at the upper end of medium-bodied. Then the very long crushed-stone finish leaves no doubt about the greatness of this unique dry white. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

This dry white cuvée is a revelation! Stunning interplay of cool and warm, plus a slew of ripe-peach, crisp-pear, quince and wet-stone character. Amazingly deep and structured for just 12.5% alcohol, yet it glides over your palate, ending with a burst of crushed rock. A blend of 40% riesling, 40% olaszrizling and 20% furmint from the volcanic hill of St. George. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

Breathtakingly subtle nose of ripe peach, honeysuckle and rose! Then comes the astonishing palate that combines excellent concentration and textural complexity with mineral finesse. A hint of tannin at the very long finish accentuates the impression of uplifting freshness there. From vines planted during the 1970s on the southern side of the volcanic hill of St. George. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.
